Garey (Artist Blacksmith - Chestnut Tree Forge) |
 |
|
uy
Garey works from his forge in Portobello on the Otago Peninsula,
New Zealand creating ornamental ironwork using traditional
blacksmithing techniques.
Guy
‘took up the hammer’ after being shipwrecked by
Hurricane Hugo in the Caribbean some years ago. He established
Chestnut Tree Forge in New Zealand fifteen years ago and at
the turn of the century spent a year in the USA on a blacksmithing
sabbatical. He also teaches blacksmithing from his forge.
Guy
is a founding member of the Artist Blacksmith Association
of NZ. He has shown work in numerous art exhibitions and has
work in NZ, Australia, USA and UK. One of his pieces is included
in the entrance gate to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre,
London.
Guy’s
art and architectural work ranges from traditional to contemporary.
He says of his work
“I love working with iron; its possibilities and inherent
contradictions are endlessly fascinating.” |

 hat
is it that drives thousands of New Zealander’s (supposedly
sane) to use their “spare” time removing countless old
layers of paint, lifting vinyl flooring, tearing down sarking and
old lathe and plaster, stripping sanding or polishing old timber
flooring, tiling, sourcing matching skirting boards and cornice
detailing, sifting through second hand and salvage yards for the
elusive “gem” that will look just perfect “there”,
and enduring countless other dreadful tasks which might be considered
cruel punishment if dealt by the court system? It is this same dedication
we are all endowed with…to capture our homes as snapshots
from a more elegant and timeless era when quality of life meant
more than our modern plastic coated throw away world of today.
We are dedicated and proud to be part of this “collective
insanity” and committed to keeping the past alive for future
generations.
To
all of you out there with aching limbs, and tired backs, give yourselves
a pat on the back!
