“Whatever you have in your room, think first of the walls, for they are that which makes your house and home.”
– William Morris (1852)
aWhat makes a room....

rts and Crafts wallpapers are characterised by stylised decorative forms found in or inspired by nature. By using continuous flowing lines and carefully positioned repeats, William Morris was able to convey the spontaneous natural growth in nature in his wallpaper designs, producing over 41 of them during his illustrious career. His success greatly influenced other followers of the Arts and Crafts movement including C.F.A.Voysey, and Walter Crane in England, the Weiner Werkstatte in Austria, and American designers such as Candice Wheeler. Wallpapers from the Great Arts and Crafts designers are still available as either machine or hand-prints (much more expensive).

They can be utilised as continuous wall covering, or above a dado rail, or in some cases a single wall. The important thing to remember when choosing a wallpaper design, is to ensure that the overall effect is in harmony with your furniture and other decoration. Try to envisage the design in accordance with the room’s proportions; the larger the room the greater the size of repeats and the bolder the patterns you can get away with. Do not overwhelm a smaller room with the choice of wallpaper. A good idea is to assemble a selection of different patterns you wish to explore and view these in both natural and artificial light to ensure you make the correct choice. Sometimes a design or “frieze” may be used above the panelling and below the ceiling line (usually one or the other). The inspiration for the use of decorative friezes came from the painted or stencilled borders that were favoured in medieval and Renaissance houses.

he decorating firm which later became known as Morris & Co was founded in 1861. Under the direction of William Morris it developed into a flourishing and fashionable business particularly renowned for its wallpapers and textiles.

The majority of these were designed by Morris himself, although some very fine patterns were drawn by other designers such as Morris' daughter, May, and J.H.Dearle, who became artistic director of the firm after Morris' death in 1896.

The Morris & Co patterns have their origins in the arts and crafts movement and became popular in late Victorian 'artistic homes of taste', but it is true to say that their characteristic style has never been more widely appreciated than it is today.
